Countertransference, a therapist or counselor’s emotional responses to clients, has traditionally been thought of as an obstacle in the therapeutic process. What research now tells us is that understanding and using countertransference can be essential to working successfully in the mental health field. This perspective is particularly true when working with individuals living with a co-occurring disorder who tend to evoke strong responses from helpers. In this workshop, you review different types of countertransference, paying special attention to how you know you are in a countertransference response, and how you can use the information it contains to work effectively with your clients. Rather than seeing countertransference as a burden, this workshop helps you focus on seeing the helper’s response as invaluable information about your clients. Paying attention to your responses to clients rather than judging or diminishing them can make your work more meaningful, effective and fun.
Prerequisites:
Students in the Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies who are not licensed mental health clinicians must have completed the Level II certificate courses, or be working or in an internship in the field.
