On June 9, 2106, California became the fifth state in the nation to enact an End of Life Option Act (EoLOA). This act gives Californians with a terminal illness the legal right to receive medication to hasten the end of their life. This option presents a quandary for many families and health-care professionals: families may agree or disagree with a family member’s request and health-care professionals may be comfortable or uncomfortable in participating in this journey with their patient/client. This one-day workshop helps you to better understand the law and a range of ethical issues, address your own feelings about working with people considering EoLOA, and reviews useful resources available for questions and assistance. This workshop is designed for both health and mental health professionals.
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this seminar, you should:
- Be able to articulate the EoLOA law and its implications for patients and their families
- Understand how to initiate a conversation about options for care with a seriously ill patient
- Know the criteria for patient eligibility for EoLOA
- Be able to refer to culturally competent community resources for the dying
- Know how to address ethical issues that arise for themselves and their patients
