Mental health issues are common in addiction settings, and the coordination of mental health and substance treatment is critical to the field. Learn how to recognize the signs of commonly co-occurring disorders, how to tailor substance abuse interventions to clients with different types of mental health problems and how to recognize when to refer clients elsewhere. We will discuss concepts, apply them to common scenarios and practice skills. We will also discuss the influence of the client-empowerment movement, and examine research-based interventions such as motivational interviewing, 12-Step Facilitation and skills-based approaches.
