In this workshop, learn to recognize signs of depression in the elderly (cognitive versus emotional versus neurovegetative signs) and differentiate them from signs of dementia. Examine the criteria for diagnosing dementia and the varying courses of disease progression (for example, depression heralding dementia, depression comorbid with dementia, depression as a consequence of having dementia). Then, analyze the prevalence of depression across different types of dementia, investigate psychiatric and neuropsychological correlates that differentiate pseudodementia from dementia, and learn how they can be extrapolated from clinical interview and cognitive-testing results.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Understand the normal course of cognitive aging in older adults
- Dagnose dementia, depression co-morbid with dementia and depression as a consequence of dementia
- Recognize causal mechanisms linking depression to dementia
- Recognize different clinical manifestations of depression—cognitive, emotional and somatic—in the elderly
- Know the prevalence rates of depression across different dementia types
