Berkeley Global
Effective health care and counseling approaches attempting to alleviate or transform the effects of grief include both physical and mental treatment methods. This two-day course provides information, skills, and resources needed to understand the grief process. It demonstrates combining physical, verbal, Eastern, and Western therapeutic modalities; teaches the art of skillful communication; and instructs the use of both Western and Eastern therapies. This workshop is intended for health and mental health professionals, hospice staff, clergy, first responders, massage therapists, and any others who work in settings with individuals facing loss and grief.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Define the common phases and stages of grief
- Recognize the differences between acute, prolonged and complicated grief
- Describe the common somatic aspects of grief and loss
- Understand the basics of the mind-body connection, psychoimmunology and how this interchange may affect the grieving person
- Recognize grief-related illnesses
- Identify warning signs and symptoms that require further medical evaluation
- Delineate the differences among grief, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder
- Identify warning signs and symptoms that require further mental health evaluation
- Deploy resources and coping strategies for aiding grieving clients/patients
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of professional burnout
- Acquire resources to help the professional–those dealing with grieving clients and patients–cope with the stresses associated with caring for the grieving
