Once believed to be a rare psychiatric illness, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is now considered to be the fourth most common form of mental illness. Although not as well-known as OCD, body dysmorphic disorder is considered to be one of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, with its distinguishing feature being obsessions pertaining to physical appearance. The primary purpose of this workshop is to familiarize you with the two diagnoses, to review cognitive and behavioral manifestations of each, and to thoroughly explore forms of treatment.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Identify likely causes, and understand the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
- Assess the presence of the two disorders by developing a thorough understanding of the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for each
- Explain reasons for considering BDD as an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder
- Recognize considerations of differential diagnosis for each disorder
- Compare OCD and BDD and understand why the two are classified differently
- Identify co-morbid disorders
- Identify cognitive and behavioral manifestations of OCD and BDD
- Recognize medications most commonly used to treat these disorders
- Refer patients and families to available support resources
