When working with individuals who have experienced trauma, you may find yourself facing moments when your resilience is overwhelmed by the stories you are hearing, the behaviors you are witnessing and the feelings that these stories bring up. In this workshop, define vicarious trauma and learn about its various manifestations, as well as how it differs from countertransference, burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder. Review the risk factors for developing vicarious trauma, how to recognize it in yourself and the systems in which many people work, and how to address it at both individual and institutional levels. This workshop includes experiential exercises to help integrate learning.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe the primary themes of the traumatized patient
- Identify the primary treatment goals for the traumatized patient
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of secondary traumatization in the work setting
- Facilitate discussion, and practice ways to identify and remedy secondary traumatization
- Identify ways to use secondary traumatization in a clinical setting for the therapeutic process
