A segment of health informatics, health information technology (HIT) includes a variety of systems, such as patient electronic health records, decision support systems and administrative applications. HIT focuses on how information is acquired, stored, retrieved and used in a variety of healthcare applications. When these systems work together, health care organizations are able to provide better care and to operate more efficiently.

Integrating the three disciplines of information science, computer science and health care, this course provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of health informatics from a clinical and financial perspective. You also delve into understanding the role of an informaticist.

Melanie Meyer

Melanie Meyer, M.S., Ph.D., helps health care organizations better utilize technology and data to deliver higher-quality care at a lower cost. For more than 15 years, she has worked in a wide variety of health care settings, including health system, physician practice, post-acute care, managed care, community health and academic medical center. Dr. Meyer is a recipient of the CHIA Literary Award and has written articles for Journal of AHIMA, Population Health Management and Gartner, among others. She uses a team-based, collaborate approach to enable enterprise-wide performance improvement through the successful integration of health care clinical and financial information systems with improved business operational processes across the continuum of care.
