Writing remains an essential skill for professionals in almost every field, yet many of us are so out of practice and confused by rules that even simple projects fill us with anxiety. These four intensive workshop meetings offer sensible advice, expose myths and lay out an approach to writing that help you communicate more clearly and confidently. Each workshop includes lecture, discussion and exercises.
Prerequisites: English language proficiency, Microsoft Word and access to email
Learner Outcomes
Understanding Your Readers:
Knowing your audience makes writing easier. This workshop helps you assess your intended reader or readers and then vary syntax, diction, voice and content to make them appropriate for your particular task.
Controlling Your Style:
No single style works for every writing situation. This workshop reveals the fundamentals of style and helps you adjust your style to the needs of each project. Topics include word choice, sentence logic, metaphors and modeling.
Exploring the Power of Grammar:
Authorities disagree on many grammar rules, which is why this workshop focuses on the utility and power of grammar and punctuation.
Improving Your Writing Edit by Edit:
This workshop helps you shift from writing a draft to editing it. Exercises help you evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of your editing choices as you seek to eliminate clutter, spot errors and the illogical, and improve your structure and style.
