Get an overview of evidence-based interventions used in the developing field of behavioral medicine. Medical illness can change the course of patients’ and their families’ lives, presenting new and daily challenges that can steal meaning and purpose from everyday living. In this workshop, you examine CBT tools to meet the needs of patients and their families, analyze and identify methods of building social support, and learn practical steps to instill hope and meaning within the bounds of medical limitations.

- Understand and identify at least five emotional, cognitive or behavioral challenges faced by medical patients in their daily lives
- Understand and identify at least two physical health barriers of medical patients and strategies for coping
- Identify three types of social support relevant to medical patients

- Welcome and introductions
- Overview of course
- Share and discuss case examples of medical patients
- Elaborate and apply the CBT model to identify cognitions, emotions and behaviors activated in common situations in daily life of a composite of medical patients
- Discuss common physical health challenges that are likely to occur for such a patient and how they can use CBT principles to manage them
Lunch
Afternoon Topics
- Review social support and its relevance to physical health and how medical patients can utilize it
- Discuss methods that foster communication in relationships with a partner, social support in general and a health care team
- Review skills for addressing chronic problems that can stack up when a family is faced with a major medical challenge
- Develop future strategies to prepare for flare-ups, relapses and end-of-life care by creating an individual road map
