Learn to recognize symptoms of dementia and understand their neuropsychiatric origins. Examine differential diagnoses between dementia and delirium, and develop an understanding of the range of environmental interventions for challenging behaviors that can often be understood as forms of communication. You also learn how to use basic assessment tools and techniques and how to develop behavioral treatment plans.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will have learned:
- How to recognize the symptoms and syndromes of dementia
- How to understand differential diagnoses between dementia and delirium
- Neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementing illness and their origins
- How to understand the behavioral model of dementia and recognize the risk associated with use of physical and chemical restraints
- Tools and techniques that are critical to creating “restraint free environments” in skilled nursing facilities, including the motivation assessment scale, functional assessment scale and simple behavioral observation skills
