Learn about distinctive treatment needs for women in the area of alcohol and drug use, as well as psychiatric disorders that occur with such abuse. Examine a range of models, with a particular focus on the medical setting, aimed at improving the availability, accessibility and quality of treatment for women. Review current research on biopsychosocial correlates of addiction and implications for the treatment among women with comorbid conditions, such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. You pay particular attention to co-occurring psychiatric disorders, medical conditions (including HIV/AIDS), childhood physical and sexual abuse histories, domestic violence, and socioeconomic hardship. You also examine recently published information concerning the epidemiology of addiction among women. Study sample interviews of women to facilitate discussion of a variety of comorbid conditions and treatment needs. Adequate time is available for questions and extended discussion from participants.
