Courses begin every month. A new edition of our catalog is published three times a year in early April, July and December.
Be your best with a certificate program from the continuing education arm of UC Berkeley. A UC Berkeley Extension certificate is a widely respected credential certifying successful completion of a high-caliber, in-depth course of study. We also offer targeted programs, sequences, teaching credentials, and licensure courses to make sure you get the training you need to succeed in your career and in your life.
Many programs offer free, no-obligation Information Sessions at the beginning of each term, where instructors and staff are on hand to answer your questions.
Certificate programs focus study in a particular subject area, enabling students to acquire the needed skills, analytical tools, and resources to achieve intellectual mastery and/or technical expertise in the subject. The courses in the certificate curricula build from core competencies to advanced levels, balancing theory and practice as appropriate to the discipline. Some certificate programs are designed primarily to enhance the skills of practicing professionals, while others are tailored for students who are new to the field or a particular aspect of it. Certificate programs require a minimum of 140 hours of coursework, generally 5 to 8 required and elective courses. Students may take one or two courses in a program prior to registering in the certificate program. Prerequisites vary by program.
Each professional sequence focuses on one area of specialization and is tailored to a specific audience and objective. The curriculum combines sets of knowledge and/or skills that reflect a complexity and integration beyond what normally would be covered in one course, and exposes students to multiple perspectives on the subject. Sequences typically consist of three or more coordinated, sequential courses and require at least 90 hours of evaluated learning activity.
Note: If during the course of the sequence you decide that a related certificate program would be more appropriate for you, some sequence coursework can be applied toward certain certificate programs.
TO BECOME A TEACHER: Credential programs are designed for those who want to enter the teaching profession in the areas of adult or vocational education. These programs vary widely in terms of time required to complete. Prerequisites, fees, and the application requirements also vary.
