If you are new to HR, we suggest starting with Essentials of Human Resources BUS ADM X450.1.

Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree highly recommended. If you are new to Human Resources, we suggest starting with Essentials of Human Resources.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum consists of 8 semester units of Core Courses (usually or 5 classes) and 8 semester units of electives (usually 4 courses) for a total of 16 semester units (240 hours of instruction). You may select your electives from the Core Courses or the electives section. Candidates must pay a nonrefundable certificate registration fee.

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. To receive the certificate, you must maintain an overall minimum 3.0 grade point average, with a grade of C or better in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 4.0 or higher. All coursework must be completed within three to five years. By taking two courses per term, you can complete the certificate within five semesters (one to two years).

How to Register

By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register online for the Certificate Program in Human Resource Management, complete these two steps:

  1. Submit the online registration, and complete your student account profile if you are a new student.
  2. Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart.

You should register for the certificate after you complete the first course in the curriculum.

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The certificate has an estimated total cost of $8,200 (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Certificate and Award Request

Once you have completed the certificate coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your certificate. Send an email to extension-business@berkeley.edu or call (510) 642-4231. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved (usually within two to three weeks), your certificate will be mailed to you.

Interested in Taking the PHR or SPHR Exam?
We highly recommend first completing the certificate program before taking either exam prep course through the HR Certification Institute. Certification requires you to sit for a three-hour exam, which tests knowledge in six core areas of Human Resources. The PHR exam has a pass rate of about 65 percent, and the SPHR exam has a pass rate of about 55 percent. Certification lasts for three years. In order to recertify, you have to either complete 60 hours of approved ongoing education/professional development in HR or take the exam again. Refer to the HR Certification Institute for details.

Recertification Through HR Certification Institute

The required courses in this certificate have been approved for recertification credit hours toward Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

The use of this seal is not an endorsement by HR Certification Institute of the quality of the program. It means that this program has met HR Certification Institute's criteria to be preapproved for recertification credit.
