Who Should Enroll

The Advanced Biosciences Program is designed for:

  • Individuals preparing for graduate or professional study in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, public health and related health professions
  • Biotechnology and biopharmaceutical professionals seeking to expand their scientific expertise
  • Public health professionals interested in emerging developments in biomedical science
  • Professionals in law, finance, consulting, sales, communications and intellectual property who collaborate with scientists, clinicians or researchers
  • Career changers seeking foundational knowledge in the life sciences
  • Lifelong learners seeking to update knowledge in current biomedical research and biotechnology advances

Program benefits include flexible, fully customizable course planning; in-person and online courses; and pay-as-you-go course fees for the classes that you enroll in.

Prerequisites

The Advanced Biosciences Program has no formal prerequisites; however, the following preparation is recommended:

  • A bachelor's degree in science or related field.
  • A bachelor's degree with coursework in science. One year of biology and chemistry, as well as advanced mathematics coursework, is strongly recommended.

Students whose academic background differs from the recommended preparation are encouraged to email the department prior to registering for the program.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises one required course (2 semester units) and 8 semester units of electives for a total of 10 semester units (150 hours of instruction). A nonrefundable program registration fee is required upon enrollment.

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. To earn the Award of Completion, students must complete each course with a grade of C or higher. All program requirements must be completed within five years of registration.

How to Register

Students may register for the Advanced Biosciences Program at any time. Registration indicates an intention to complete the program curriculum. To enroll in the program, complete the following steps:

  1. Submit the online program registration, and create your student account profile if you are a new student.
  2. Complete the program intake form.
  3. Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart. Please allow 3–5 business days for the registration to appear in your student account.

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and students pay course fees on a per-course basis at the time of enrollment. The program has an estimated cost of $4,200 depending on choice of electives (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Certificate and Award Request

Once you have completed the program coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your Award of Completion. Send an email to extension-science@berkeley.edu. After your records have been reviewed (usually within two to three weeks), your Award of Completion will be mailed to you.
