The Certificate Program in Facilities Management provides the knowledge, tools and skills needed for successful facilities management, along with a thorough understanding of the critical business-decision-making process of the facility manager. You learn industry-essential subjects such as operations and maintenance, strategic planning, commercial real estate, project management, space planning and construction management.


There are no prerequisites for the Certificate Program in Facilities Management, but a bachelor's degree is recommended.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises 8 semester units (120 hours of instruction) from the Core Courses list and 75 instructional hours of electives for a total of 195 hours of instruction. The elective requirement may be fulfilled by completing:

  • 5 semester units (75 hours of instruction) OR
  • At least 3 semester units and up to 3.9 CEUs (75 hours of instruction)

You may also choose to complete any UC Berkeley Extension courses in Business, Construction Management, HVAC, Environmental Management, Smart Grids, or Interior Design and Interior Architecture not listed above as electives, with department approval.

Candidates must pay a nonrefundable certificate registration fee.

All academic credit courses must be taken for a letter grade. To receive the certificate, you must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA), with a grade of C or better (no C– grades) in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 3.9 or higher (effective to those who register beginning Sept. 1, 2016). All coursework must be completed within five years.

How to Register

By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register online for the Certificate Program in Facilities Management, complete these two steps:

  1. Submit the online registration form, and complete your student account profile if you are a new student.
  2. Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart. Please allow 3–5 business days for the registration to appear in your student account.

You should register for the certificate before you begin the third course in the curriculum.

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The certificate has an estimated cost of $4,500–$5,400 (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Certificate and Award Request

Once you have completed the certificate coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your certificate. Send an email to extension-techeng@berkeley.edu or call (510) 642-4151. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved (usually within two to three weeks), your certificate will be mailed to you.
