What are the benefits of UC Berkeley Extension's Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program?
  • Lower-division prerequisites and upper-division coursework needed for admission to most professional programs in the health sciences. These courses are taken through us with class sizes of 15 to 30 students and are offered at several locations in the Bay Area.
  • Evening and weekend course offerings, making it possible to continue working or doing other extracurriculars during the day.
  • Pay-as-you-go program, where you only pay course fees for the classes you enroll in for the upcoming semester.
  • In-depth academic and career advising, allowing you to tailor your course plan and identify the medical or health program that fits your interests.
  • Priority enrollment for high-demand courses.
  • Application assistance for graduate and professional programs, including the eligibility to request a composite letter of recommendation.
  • Access to leads for volunteer, internship and paid opportunities in the health care field.
  • Access to discounted standardized-test prep courses.

Prerequisites

College graduates who hold a baccalaureate degree and have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply for the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises 4 required courses and a varied number of electives (depending on specific courses taken) for a total of 1.9 ceu and 24 semester units*. All credit courses must be taken for a grade, and students must maintain at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Transfer credit is not accepted.

Candidates must pay a nonrefundable program registration fee. All coursework must be completed within three years. However, requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion.

Credits earned in online sections are not applicable toward the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program.

How to Register

We have a rolling admissions policy, which means that we consider applications every month of the year. There is no application deadline, but it is advisable to submit all of your materials at least two months prior to your intended date of matriculation.

To apply to the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program:

Starting August 15, 2019, all applicants must apply through PostBacCAS. Be sure to add the “UC Berkeley Extension” program to your application.

Items required for a complete application:

  • Current C.V. or résumé
  • Any standardized test scores (GRE, MCAT, DAT, PCAT, etc.) if already taken
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation - at least one (1) from an academic reference (i.e., a faculty member from which you earned a letter grade)
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. International transcripts must be professionally translated. Your baccalaureate degree must be listed on your transcript.
  • Response to all questions on the “Questions” tab of the application.

Notes:

  1. If you submitted the $100 application fee, your personal essays, and your CV/résumé before August 1, 2019, you will not need to reapply via PostBacCAS.
  2. If you are accepted into the program, you will need to pay a nonrefundable $100 registration fee.

Certificate and Award Request

Once you have completed the program coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your Award of Completion. Send an email to extension-prehealth@berkeley.edu. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved (usually within two to three weeks), your Award of Completion will be mailed to you.

Videos

Additional Information

You must be accepted into the program to take advantage of the Health Careers seminars. Completion of the 24 semester units of electives is required only for students who wish to receive the Award of Completion.

Students who have been accepted to the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program receive priority enrollment for high-demand laboratory courses. Instructions for priority enrollment are emailed a month before the beginning of the fall and spring enrollment periods. Students who fail to meet the priority enrollment deadlines can enroll in courses when enrollment opens.
