A continuation of the study of differential and integral calculus from MATH X11 - Calculus 1. This course covers further techniques and applications of integration, infinite sequences and series, and an introduction to differential equations. Key topics will include first-order ordinary differential equations, exact equations, second-order ordinary differential equations, oscillation and damping, and series solutions of ordinary differential equations. Emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to think critically and analytically in the realm of mathematics.

Prerequisites:

Calculus I MATH X11 or equivalent

This course is designed to help you achieve the following objectives:

  • An understanding of the basic methods of integration and the use of tables of integrals.
  • A better understanding of the limit concept through the use of sequences.
  • An ability to conceptualize the relationship between partial sums and infinite series.
  • An understanding of six basic tests for series convergence.
  • Knowledge of error estimates when using an approximation for the sum of an infinite series.
  • An understanding of the representation of an analytic function as a power series.
  • An understanding that functions are solutions to differential equations.
  • Knowledge of the use of differential equations in applications.
  • Knowledge of methods of solving first- and second-order equations.
  • An ability to see the relationship between infinite series and differential equations.

Online, enroll anytime. This continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course. 

Students must score a 70% or higher on the final exam to pass the course.

The Start Anytime Course Orientation: Mathematics and Statistics (UNEX 1416) is required for all students taking Start Anytime Continuous Enrollment online mathematics and statistics courses. Please enroll in the free, short orientation, where you will explore tips on how to be successful and gain familiarity with requirements and procedures.

Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.

Winnie Wong

Winnie Wong, Ph.D., holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in applied mathematics from UCLA and a B.A. in mathematics from UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on bubble dynamics and sonoluminescence. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching mathematics at higher education institutions. Dr. Wong has taught a wide range of math courses in both in-person and online formats. She values inclusive, engaging instruction and is dedicated to supporting diverse learners. In addition to teaching, Dr. Wong also currently serves as president of Evergreen Education Foundation, leading literacy, early child development and STEM access programs for rural communities in China. Dr. Wong also collaborates globally on education and design thinking initiatives. Outside of work, she enjoys playing the cello, listening to classical music, solving Sudoku puzzles and lifelong learning.
