Introduction to Chemistry

Become versed in the language of chemistry in this introductory nonlab course. You’ll learn the basic principles of chemistry, including understanding the interactions between atoms, molecules and elements; chemical bonding and chemical reactions at the atomic level; and more. You’ll also gain an understanding of the various types of chemical reactions and the quantitative aspects involved. At the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of acids, bases, chemical equilibrium, oxygen/reduction reactions and more.

Prerequisites: Although a background in chemistry is not necessary, a basic knowledge of math, including algebra, is required.

Online, enroll anytime. This continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course. On average, 3-semester unit courses will take approximately 45 hours of instructional time and 90 hours of study time.

Students must score a 70% or higher on the final exam to pass the course.

The Start Anytime Course Orientation: Science (UNEX 1406) is required for all students taking Start Anytime Continuous Enrollment online science courses. Please enroll in the free, short orientation, where you will explore tips on how to be successful and gain familiarity with requirements and procedures.

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Weiwei Gu

Weiwei Gu, Ph.D., obtained her doctorate in biophysics from UC Davis. She completed her postdoctoral training in Dr. Paul Alivisatos’ group at UC Berkeley, where she studied the use of fluorescent nanoparticles to track live cells and analyze cancer cell behavior in vitro, and prior to working as a research specialist at UCSF, where she focused on soft X-ray microscopy and tomography. Since 2009, Dr. Gu has been teaching chemistry and biochemistry online at UC Berkeley Extension. Her continued passion for teaching has led her to become an active advocate in her local community for education and STEM-related programs that support young students’ interests in math and science.

Dr. Gu is also a lab and operations director at NVIGEN Inc., supervising lab functions, operation and business development with the vision of using molecular-engineered nanoparticles as a platform to innovate personalized medicine.
