Agile product owners create paths for success by envisioning and evangelizing solutions. These solutions are business models that are based in understanding the context in which they work to propose a clear solution to improve outcomes.

Product owners collaborate with stakeholders to define, prioritize and manage requirements for the development of solutions and services. Through the application of Agile discovery processes and a customer journey, they manage the business requirements process. This process ensures that project’s business outcomes meets user needs while providing value as early as possible.

In this course, you explore all of the principles and practices, tools and techniques, and roles related to Agile product ownership. You learn how to engage all types of stakeholders; understand requirements discovery processes; and learn how to employ customer journey principles to understand a project’s value proposition, user needs, and appropriate product requirements and solutions.

As part of the course curriculum, you first create a vision and value proposition to propose how the organization creates value. You then align the team around themes, create user stories, define acceptance criteria and prioritize requirements in a product backlog. You define minimum viable solutions to create high-level product roadmaps.You also learn how product owners engage in development planning and delivery.

While the course curriculum focuses on the role of a product owner, your study also helps you define the contributions required from a variety of stakeholders, which can include customers, business leaders, product managers, IT teams, business analysts, customer journey analysts, scrum masters and subject matter experts to successfully define user, business, and solution requirements.

You learn how Agile product ownership applies to the development of different products and services in a variety industries and organizations. You also learn how to implement these practices utilizing Scrum, Kanban, Lean and other appropriate Agile frameworks.

As part of the course requirements, you create all of the core Agile product owner’s deliverables in the context of group projects, class activities and written assignments.

After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the role of an Agile product owner
  • Engage with a wide variety of stakeholders to create a product vision and propose a value proposition
  • Understand and lead customer journey efforts to create insights and solution vision or improvements
  • Lead workshops using design thinking and other customercentric visualization and facilitation approaches
  • Express requirements as user stories and bundle them as themes and epics
  • Define solutions as minimum viable products
  • Create a solution roadmap
  • Understand how to apply all of these tools, techniques and practices to develop products, solutions and services in a wide variety of industries
  • Engage in development processes using Scrum, Kanban, Lean or other appropriate frameworks
  • Understand how to engage with development teams to plan product development and delivery

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Cecilio Mills, B.S., CCM, SMC, PMP, ACP, LSSP, is the former CEO of PMI, SF Bay Area, and is a principal consultant for Creative Adaptive Thinking. He has more than 20 years of experience managing and building projects and products for IT, construction, cloud migration, health care, government, education, non-profit and software delivery organizations such as Poly, Kaiser and Contra Costa County. Additionally, Mills is an Agile coach who presents and keynote speaks at global conferences, and conducts leadership and business efficiency workshops. He is a former K–12 credentialed teacher, a two-time Golden Glove Champion and an author of a business process patent powering the products such as MiScan.
