Frequently Asked Questions for User Experience (UX) Design
Is this a degree-granting program?
Complete 1 elective and 6 required courses to receive a certificate of completion. Degrees are not granted.
How many courses should I take at once? How long is the program?
Study part time by taking 1–2 courses per semester, or full time by taking 4 courses per semester. Complete the program within 3 years.
Are courses available online? How are they structured?
Courses are available in Live Online and Online Asynchronous formats. Online Asynchronous courses have specific start and end dates, with an assigned instructor who answers questions and grades assignments. Complete assignments within the dates posted in your online classroom.
When are the courses offered?
Required courses are all offered every semester (Spring, Summer and Fall).
Can I take the courses in any order?
We highly recommend that you take the courses in the order they appear on our website from top to bottom. In addition, several courses have prerequisites.
How do I enroll?
Enroll online. Visit the course page, add the course to your cart, and follow the on-screen instructions to check out.
Can international students enroll in online courses?
International students on an F-1 visa should email Berkeley Global visiting-intl@berkeley.edu before enrolling in any online courses.
Can I succeed in this program if I have never taken a design course before?
Yes! We will teach you the fundamentals and build your skills. We recommend taking the courses in order.
When do I learn about upcoming courses?
Courses are usually listed on our website 3–4 months in advance. Please check our website for updated schedules. We host info sessions throughout the year in Spring (January to March), Summer (May) and Fall (August). Info session recordings are also available on our program page.
Also, our Art and Design department and Marketing department will send you reminders via email.
What kind of financial assistance is available?
See the Financial Assistance page.
Is UC Berkeley Extension academic credit transferable?
Please contact your school directly to learn about transfer acceptance criteria.
Can I transfer credit from a college or university?
We do not accept transfer credits.
Can I substitute courses?
Generally we do not allow you to substitute courses. Exceptions, however, can be made on a case-by-case basis, especially if you have taken a course at another institution in the last 5 years with a similar number of hours and the same number of units or higher. In addition, we will study your body of work from that particular course to see if it meets UC Berkeley Extension standards. If the substitution is granted, you must still choose another course from the UX design offerings to replace the course you are opting out from. We have a list of such Related Courses of Interest on the program webpage.
Are internships available?
We receive requests from companies for student interns regularly. We then forward these internship opportunities to our students via email, as well as through our social media accounts. You could also visit our Berkeley Global Career Services for more information.
