Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the Professional Program in User Experience (UX) Design, but a bachelor's degree is preferred.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises 6 required courses and a minimum of 2 units of electives for a total of 14 semester units (minimum 222 hours of instruction). Candidates must pay a nonrefundable program registration fee.

You must take all courses for a letter grade. To receive the Award of Completion, you must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5, with a grade of C or better in each course. All coursework must be completed within three years.

You can complete this program in as few as two terms. If you want to study full-time, you can take four courses during the first term and three in the second (or vice-versa).

How to Register

By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register online for the Professional Program in User Experience (UX) Design, complete these two steps:

  1. Submit the online registration, and complete your student account profile if you are a new student.
  2. Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart. Please allow 3–5 business days for the registration to appear in your student account.

 

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The required and elective courses for the program have an estimated cost of $7,793 (not including course materials, or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Certificate and Award Request

Once you have completed the program coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your Award of Completion. Send an email to extension-uxdesign@berkeley.edu or call (510) 643-8916. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved (usually within two to three weeks), your award of completion will be mailed to you.

Special Instructions for International Students

There are no admission requirements for international students who wish to complete a course or certificate online. You may register for any online course available for enrollment. Follow the registration and enrollment process for the online course you have selected.

If you are an international student who would like to study in the U.S. and require a student visa, you must apply and be officially accepted into UC Berkeley Extension's Professional Diploma Programs before enrolling in any courses associated with this certificate. Apply now.

FAQ

Is this a degree-granting program?

Complete 1 elective and 6 required courses to receive a certificate of completion. Degrees are not granted.

How many courses should I take at once? How long is the program?

Study part time by taking 1-2 courses per semester, or full time by taking 4 courses per semester. Complete the program within 3 years.

Are courses available online? How are they structured?

Courses are available in Live Online and Online Asynchronous formats. Online Asynchronous courses have specific start and end dates, with an assigned instructor who answers questions and grades assignments. Complete assignments within the dates posted in your online classroom.

When are the courses offered?

Required courses are all offered every semester (Spring, Summer and Fall).

Can I take the courses in any order?

We recommend taking courses in the order given on the website. Several have prerequisites which are listed on the course pages.

How do I enroll?

Enroll online. Visit the course page, add the course to your cart, and follow the on-screen instructions to check out.

Can international students enroll in online courses?

International students on an F-1 visa should email Berkeley Global extension-intl@berkeley.edu before enrolling in any online courses.

Can I succeed in this program if I have never taken a design course before?

Yes! We will teach you the fundamentals and build your skills. We recommend taking the courses in order.

When do I learn about upcoming courses?

Courses are usually listed on our website 3–4 months in advance.

What kind of financial assistance is available?

Is UC Berkeley Extension academic credit transferable?

Please contact your school directly to learn about transfer acceptance criteria.

Can I transfer credit from a college or university?

We do not accept transfer credits.

Can I substitute courses?

Substitutions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis for courses taken in the last 5 years with a similar number of hours and the same or greater number of units. If granted, you must still complete another course in UX or graphic design.
