Berkeley Global
UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment program provides an opportunity to enroll in UC Berkeley campus courses on a space-available basis without formal admission to the University. Students may submit applications to UC Berkeley classes as a visiting student. Approval of class applications is at the sole discretion of the campus academic departments.
Concurrent Enrollment is available in fall and spring terms. If you’re interested in attending a campus course during the summer, check out Summer Sessions.
Program Application Instructions
Concurrent Enrollment is available in the fall and spring terms. Students must submit an application and pay a non-refundable $100 application fee for each term they wish to attend before the published deadline.
Special programs/cohort programs may have different application instructions and deadlines. Please consult with your program.
All students from countries in which the official language is not English will be required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency in this application. Accepted minimum test scores are: TOEFL score of 90 (iBT), IELTS Academic Format score of 7.0, or Duolingo score of 125. Click here for more information about these requirements and waiver options.
Within 3–4 business days of application submission, you will receive instructions to establish a CalNet ID and be granted access to the CalCentral and class application portal.

I am an International Student Seeking Full-Time Programs and F/J Visa
International students who do not wish to apply to a degree-granting program at UC Berkeley are welcome to apply for concurrent enrollment. UC Berkeley Extension has a dedicated International Student Services team that provides visa, housing, health and wellness, and community-building support to visiting international students.
International students have two options to attend courses at UC Berkeley and UC Berkeley Extension via concurrent enrollment.
- Apply for one of our Berkeley Global Programs: Through these 1–2 semester long programs, international students take courses at UC Berkeley. Students have access to academic support and are part of a cohort of other international students. Some programs may offer a Certificate and an opportunity for Optional Practical Training (OPT). More information on this option can be found through the link above.
- Individual Concurrent Enrollment program: This option requires students to make arrangements independently to study with a specific campus department. They must first contact and be officially invited by a UC Berkeley campus department to study in the Concurrent Enrollment program, generally for one or two semesters. Not every department accepts Concurrent Enrollment students. Once an invitation has been secured, apply via the Concurrent Enrollment Application (see top of page). For more information on this option, please view our Concurrent Enrollment Guide for International Students.
Student Visa Status
Once admitted to the Concurrent Enrollment program, international students will be invited to apply for their F/J visa documents. Students must provide a valid passport and proof of funding for their tuition and fees and living expenses ($11,250/semester) for the duration of their studies.
To maintain valid F/J student visa status while in the Concurrent Enrollment Program and/or to continue studies for an additional term(s), students must enroll full time (usually a minimum of 12 semester units per term) and be making satisfactory progress as defined by the inviting department. Students are limited to 2 semesters in the individual Concurrent Enrollment program and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. For more information, contact International Student Services.
International Health Insurance Requirement
Health insurance is mandatory if you are participating in any of our full-time international programs. We will enroll you into a comprehensive health insurance plan for the duration of your studies. View health insurance information.
Concurrent Enrollment Class Application Instructions
- You must first submit a Concurrent Enrollment program application for each term. A $100 application fee is required (see above).
- After 3–4 days, you will receive instructions on how to create your CalNet ID.
- You will use your CalNet ID to log into CalCentral, your class application and payment portal.
- When class applications open, you will apply for each class you wish to take via CalCentral.
Class Application Process
Once you apply for a class or classes, your application(s) will be forwarded to the instructor and the academic department for class approval. As each class application(s) is reviewed, approved or denied, students will receive email notifications; however, we recommend that you periodically log into CalCentral to review the status of your class application(s). You are not officially enrolled in a course until your class application has been approved at all levels it appears in CalCentral under the term schedule.
University of California Vaccine and Immunization Mandate
All students attending UC Berkeley classes must satisfy TB screening and immunization requirements as mandated by the UC Office of the President. We strongly recommend that you meet requirements listed on the UC Berkeley University Health Services page* and meet all deadlines as follows:
TB screening and Immunization Requirements (MMR, Varicella, Tdap and Meningococcal Conjugate, COVID-19):
- Fall: Due July 31
- Spring: Due December 31
The Influenza (flu) Vaccine may be required yearly in the fall semester. Please check the UHS website for updates.
*The UHS website makes reference to Tang Center appointments for outstanding vaccination. Please note that most concurrent enrollment students are not eligible for Tang Vaccination Services. You will need to arrange these directly with your health care provider or program. Most CVS, Walgreens and other retail stores offer these services.
Fees and Payment
All students are assessed the following fees every term that they apply for Concurrent Enrollment:
- $100 Program Application fee (nonrefundable)
- $250 Registration fee (nonrefundable after the start of the term)
- $750 per unit charge* for Concurrent Enrollment (nonrefundable after the drop deadline)
- An additional course materials and services fee (CSMF) is assessed for certain classes. This fee varies by section and is indicated in the course listings. Please review the Course Materials Fees section, if applicable.
- Specific cohort programs may charge a flat fee or additional program fee. These fees are generally non-refundable after the Program Fee Payment Deadline listed above. Consult your program or department for additional information regarding these fees and policies.
International students must also pay the following fees:
- $125 International Service Fee** (nonrefundable after the start of the term or after an I-20 or DS-2019 has been issued, whichever is sooner)
- $900 health insurance fee is required of all full-time students on an Extension-sponsored student visa (nonrefundable after the start of the term). View health insurance information.
- Failure to pay these fees before the Program Fee Payment Deadline listed above may result in a hold on enrollment.
*Note: Some courses have a higher per-unit tuition rate. Consult your program or department for additional information regarding these fees and policies.
**The International Service Fee is assessed to all international visitors participating in the Concurrent Enrollment program. Only Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) and U.S. passport holders are exempt from this fee.
Fees are subject to change.
Payment Deadlines
All fees are due on or before the payment deadline for each term. Students who fail to meet the payment deadline may have late fees imposed and/or lose access to services, such as bCourses or other University services, while payment is pending. Fees that are outstanding for more than 60 days will result in a hold on a student's account that will prevent future registration and enrollment. Failure to make payment in no way excludes a student from financial liability.
Payment Options
You will pay all of your fees (except the $100 application fee) via CalCentral in the “My Finances” tab. Payment options include:
- Online payments via e-check or credit card (A non-refundable service fee applies to credit card payments. The fee is 2.85% for domestic card payments and 4.25% for international card payments.)
- International payments via Flywire or Convera (Direct Wire student payments are not accepted)
- Concurrent Enrollment is not eligible for the Fee Payment Plan.
For more details about payment options, including step-by-step instructions, please visit Student Billing.
Concurrent students may be eligible for private student loans. Students who choose to use loans for concurrent enrollment fees should complete the loan application process 6–8 weeks prior to the payment deadlines.
Your Cal 1 Card and Student Services
With your registration, you will have access to the UC Berkeley Cal 1 Card, which allows you to use a host of campus services, including:
- Class Pass for public transportation
- Library privileges
- Access to the Recreational Sport Facility (RSF)
- Purchasing dining points or meal plans to use with CalDining
Grades and Transcripts
UC Berkeley Extension is the system of record for all coursework taken through Concurrent Enrollment. Concurrent enrollment grades are imported from campus systems about 3–4 weeks after final exams.
After your grades have been transferred to your University Extension account, refer to the instructions for transcript orders.
