Berkeley Global
UC Berkeley has committed to keep a fully remote option open for all students, but is also prepared to implement plans for select in-person instruction activities for those students who can take advantage of them, if conditions change during the term.
UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment program provides an opportunity to enroll in UC Berkeley campus courses on a space-available basis without formal admission to the University. Approval of class applications is at the sole discretion of the campus academic departments.
Concurrent Enrollment is available in fall and spring terms. If you’re interested in attending a campus course during the summer, check out Summer Sessions.

Failure to withdraw by this date, even if you stop attending, may result in a failing grade.
I am Interested in Fully Remote/Online UC Berkeley Courses
Any student can apply for concurrent enrollment. UC Berkeley will begin the fall 2020 semester with fully remote instruction for all classes, and in-person attendance is not an option for these classes. Other modes of instruction are "In Person" (in-person attendance is required), "Hybrid" (some in-person attendance is required), "Flexible" (in-person attendance is optional, but it is offered), or "Web-Based" (delivered fully online and no in-person attendance is required). IMPORTANT: Some class sections offered as remote have in-person or hybrid components, such as a lab or discussion. Please review this FAQ page for more information on modes of course delivery.
I am an International Student Seeking Full-Time Programs and F-1 Visa
International students who do not wish to apply to a degree-granting program at UC Berkeley have two options to attend courses at UC Berkeley and UC Berkeley Extension.
- Berkeley Global Access (BGA) Program. Through this short-term program, international students take courses at UC Berkeley and maintain F-1 visa status. In addition, BGA students have access to academic, visa, and housing support from a dedicated international student services team and are part of a cohort of other international students. More information on this option can be found through the link above.
- Individual Concurrent Enrollment Program. This option requires students to make arrangements independently to study with a specific campus department. They must contact and be officially invited by a UC Berkeley campus department to study in the Concurrent Enrollment program, generally for one or two semesters. Not every department accepts Concurrent Enrollment students. More information on this option can be found below and in the other sections on this page.
Whether you choose BGA or the individual option, UC Berkeley Extension issues international students a Certificate of Eligibility Form I-20 for full-time study. Students must apply to each class they wish to take and each class application is subject to review and approval (see Class Application Process below). Upon arrival in the U.S., students must attend a mandatory orientation session.
Individual Concurrent Enrollment Option
Application Process
To apply, students must submit their International Concurrent Enrollment application online before the published deadline. The application link can be found at the top right of this page or by logging into their UC Berkeley Extension account. Students will be required to upload their official invitation letter from a campus department, proof of financial resources, proof of English proficiency (minimum TOEFL score of 90 (iBT) or IELTS Academic Format score of 7.0 or waiver letter) and pay an application fee.
Access to Class Application Portal
Before the semester begins, students will receive their CalNet ID and access to Cal Central. Once the Class Application Portal opens (approximately 4 weeks before the semester begins), students will apply for each class they wish to enroll in. Step-by-step instructions will be provided.
Class Application Process
Each class application must be approved via the official campus review process. This may include the instructor, the department, and/or the dean. As each class application(s) is reviewed, approved or denied, students will receive automatic email notifications; however, it is recommended that students periodically log in to check the status of their class application(s). Students are not officially enrolled in a course until it appears in CalCentral under the term schedule.
F-1 Visa Status
To maintain F-1 visa status while in the Concurrent Enrollment Program and/or to continue studies for an additional term(s), students must enroll full time (usually a minimum of 12 semester units per term) and be making satisfactory progress as defined by the inviting department. Students are limited to 2 semesters in the Individual Concurrent Enrollment Program and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5.
For additional information on either option, email UC Berkeley Extension International Student Services at extension-intl@berkeley.edu.
Spring 2021 Concurrent Enrollment Instructions
- Apply for term eligibility by creating a UC Berkeley Extension Account.
- Enroll in UNEX-1221 and pay the term application fee.
- After 3–4 days, you will receive instructions on how to create your CalNet ID.
- You will use your CalNet ID to apply for classes via CalCentral.
Once you apply for a class or classes, your application(s) will be forwarded to the instructor and the academic department for class approval. We recommend that you periodically log into CalCentral to review the status of your class application(s). You are not officially enrolled in a course until your class application has been approved at all levels it appears in CalCentral under the term schedule.
Fees and Payment
All students are assessed the following fee every term that they apply for Concurrent Enrollment:
- $125 nonrefundable Concurrent Enrollment term application fee
- $250 nonrefundable Student Services fee
International students must also pay the following fees:
- $100 nonrefundable international student fee
- Health insurance is required of all students on an F1 visa who receive their Form I-20 from us. View health insurance information.
Fees are $750 per unit for Concurrent Enrollment. For classes with a lab, an additional $100 is charged.
Some programs charge a flat program and course fee per term or a higher per-unit tuition rate; consult the program or department for additional information regarding these fees.
Fees are subject to change.
Detailed instructions for tuition fee payment
There are no refunds after the add/drop deadline. Please note that special refund policies apply for certain programs; consult the program or department for additional information regarding its refund policies.
Concurrent students may be eligible for private student loans. Students who choose to use loans for concurrent enrollment fees should complete the loan application process 6–8 weeks prior to the payment deadlines.
All fees are due on or before the payment deadline for each term. Students who fail to meet the payment deadline may have late fees imposed and/or lose access to services, such as bCourses or other University services, while payment is pending. Failure to make payment in no way excludes a student from financial liability. Students who are more than one month overdue for any payment due to UC Berkeley Extension will be considered grossly delinquent and will be required to pay in advance, via cashier's check, for any and all future enrollments.
Grades and Transcripts
Concurrent enrollment grades are imported from campus systems about 3–4 weeks after final exams. UC Berkeley Extension is the system of record for all coursework taken through Concurrent Enrollment.
After your grades have been transferred to your University Extension account, refer to the instructions for transcript orders.
