This is the second course of a two-course sequence that introduces the knowledge and skills required to advise students in the transition from high school to college. You will expand your knowledge of specific college options and the admissions process. Emphasis is placed on affordability, list building, counseling special populations, and first steps toward exploring work as an independent educational consultant.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the knowledge and skills required to provide college counseling in the high school setting.
  • Identify specified legal and ethical issues in college counseling.
  • Define important terms used in college counseling.
  • Identify the primary factors utilized in admissions decisions for a variety of college types, locations, and selectivity and be able to give a national and local example of each.
  • Describe the roles of various people in the college admissions process.
  • Describe the admissions requirements and process for the state systems in their own state, and selected other colleges and universities that are popular destinations for their students.
  • Explain the factors that affect college affordability and identify resources counselors and families can use to better understand college costs.
  • Demonstrate how to research a college using public sources, campus visits, and admission officer meetings.
  • Describe resources students and families can use to build their knowledge about colleges.
  • Describe how to create a student college list and/or assess its quality.
  • Explain the ways the college advising process may vary, given differences in students’ backgrounds, skills, and/or aspirations.
  • Begin to identify what additional skills and knowledge are necessary to work as an independent educational consultant.
  • Identify personal areas for growth and professional development opportunities.

Amy McVeigh

Amy McVeigh, MBA is the Founder of Smart College Selection, an independent educational consulting firm. In that role, she personally handles a senior case load of 20 - 30 students per cycle, and also supports other consultants in her practice. She visits about 25 colleges each year and presents on college admissions topics at high schools, libraries, and national conferences such as IECA & HECA. Additionally, she volunteers in the college counseling office of a private, independent high school.

Evelyn Jerome-Alexander

Evelyn Jerome-Alexander, MA, CEP, founded Magellan College Counseling in 2011. Magellan now has twelve independent college counselors who work with students across the United States. Evelyn holds a Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, a Master of Arts from George Washington University, and a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA. She is one of only 37 Certified Educational Planners in California, the highest designation available in the college counseling profession. Evelyn is a member of NACAC, WACAC, HECA and a Professional Member of IECA. Evelyn frequently presents at professional conferences, and she visits between 30 and 35 colleges each year.

Carrie Poehlein

Carrie currently serves as the associate director of college counseling at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana. She has also worked as a college counselor at Roncalli High School, Cathedral High School, and as an admission counselor and senior admission counselor at Butler University. Carrie is an active member of the Indiana Association of College Admissions Counselors (INACAC), where she currently serves on the professional development committee and the conference planning committee. She is also a former INACAC Congress general chair, Congress program chair, and INACAC conference presenter. Carrie has served on the high school advisory boards for Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and for the University of Indianapolis. Carrie earned an M.S. in effective teaching and leadership and a B.A. in French and business studies, both from Butler University. She currently resides in McCordsville, Indiana, with her husband and two teenaged sons.
