Berkeley Global
This course is designed as a culminating experience for students in the Professional Program in College Admissions Consulting. You will deepen your knowledge and skills by working directly with students in their transition to college. You will complete a minimum of 40 hours of involvement in a school, nonprofit, family or IEC setting, working with high school or community college students who are exploring the transition to college.
Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Practicum, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the challenges faced by college-bound students and their families in the transition to college and adeptly help students transition to college.
- Develop materials for use with students and their families in a high school, community college, non-profit agency, or IEC setting.
- Demonstrate understanding of legal and ethical issues related to college admissions and apply knowledge during college admissions counseling.
- Recognize effective advising techniques such as appropriate questioning techniques, time management, session flow, and other essential topics to utilize in their counseling.
- Summarize college advising sessions and maintain confidential records to support decision-making throughout the process
- Develop appropriate techniques to build advising relationships with students, families, and admissions professionals.
- Implement the college advising skills, strategies, and methodology they have learned during prior coursework and demonstrate mastery of these skills in the Practicum setting while recognizing the work that is beyond the scope of a college admissions advisor.
