Explainer videos are the most powerful way to connect and to broadcast brand-new products, services, ideas and concepts to the brand’s possible customers or clients and they propel marketing success of brands and businesses through engaging expeditious visualizations of their products or services in an innovative manner that influences and heartens your targeted demographics. Learn the streamlined pre-production development process and key aspects of these short animated videos such as character design, style frames, story-driven animation, scripting, voice-over, sound integration and editing.

You practice creating moving graphics that integrate strategic design thinking and simplify complex ideas while expanding on Adobe creative software skill set in After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro. Throughout the course, you analyze explainer video case studies to explore the relationship between animation and marketing strategies. This course and its final project teaches you how to apply cohesive art direction on longer timelines of motion graphics and employ storytelling through call-to-action narrative. This is a project-based course in which you learn by doing, working on projects to enhance your design skills. By the end of the semester, you will have create a comprehensive portfolio piece.

  • Practice design and development through Adobe Illustrator
  • Design and create 2D pre-production assets such as storyboard, mood-board and style frames
  • Source music and sound effects that support your animated narrative
  • Work with script/voice-over to drive the story and narrative
  • Practice expressions in Adobe After Effects to speed up your animation workflow
  • Identify tone and voice for the visual content that is on brand and target of the product/service promoted
  • Simplify complex written information and translate it into a clear visual story that explains step-by-step the function of the product/service promoted
  • Expand your knowledge and skills on software such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Create and animate a full cycle explainer video for marketing purposes

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom

Ian Boldon

Ian Boldon is a Motion Designer based out of Oakland, CA, currently working at Google, via ASG, in San Francisco. He earned his B.A. in Broadcast and Electronic Communications at San Francisco State University, after serving four years in the Navy. Ian specializes in 2D Animation and has worked with many large Bay Area brands including Oracle, Google, YouTube, and Apple. Ian has some teaching experience at School of Motion in courses for After Effects, Animation Principles, Photoshop, illustrator, and Design. Ian has also written multiple articles on Motion Design for School of Motion.
