Bioethics is the study of issues (ethical, social and legal) that arise in biomedicine and biomedical research. Bioethics includes medical ethics, which focuses on issues in health care; research ethics, which focuses on issues in the conduct of research; environmental ethics, which focuses on issues pertaining to the relationship between human activities and the environment; and public health ethics, which addresses ethical issues in public health. This course will introduce students to some of the major issues within the fields of biomedical ethics, health care ethics, research ethics and public health ethics.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.

The purpose of this class is to:
- Familiarize students with the issues and arguments in bioethics
- Understand the methods and theories of ethical reasoning
- Familiarize students with a number of significant issues within the fields of medical, research, and public policy ethics
- Equip students with the skills for developing and defending ethical arguments
- Demonstrate knowledge of the various points of view presented in the required readings
- Develop the ability to analyze and critically evaluate ethical dilemmas
- Justify decisions using bioethical standards
- Relate healthcare policies to social justice and bioethics
