Examine the correlations between the structures and functions of the body's various systems in this intensive introductory course. Explore the functional anatomy of the human body through gross and microscopic examination. Topics include the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, nervous and musculoskeletal systems, with an introduction to biomechanical principles. Investigate disease pathologies affecting normal body function. The course is especially useful as an introduction to human anatomy for students interested in the medical profession.

Prerequisites:

It is recommended that students have completed one semester of college-level General Biology for science majors.

Online, enroll anytime. This continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course. On average, 3-semester unit courses will take approximately 45 hours of instructional time and 90 hours of study time.

Students must score a 70% or higher on the final exam to pass the course.

The Start Anytime Course Orientation: Science (UNEX 1406) is required for all students taking Start Anytime Continuous Enrollment online science courses. Please enroll in the free, short orientation, where you will explore tips on how to be successful and gain familiarity with requirements and procedures.

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Kashif Ahmad

Kashif Ahmad has spent most of his life in places such as Singapore, UAE, Pakistan, Hong Kong, the U.K. and the U.S. After becoming a medical doctor, he graduated with a gold medal for his Ph.D. at National University of Singapore. Since the early 2000s, Dr. Ahmad has been teaching at medical schools, health sciences institutions and liberal arts colleges. His teaching philosophy includes problem-based learning, flipped classroom teaching emphasizing spaced repetition, and continuous assessment. Awards include the Golden Apple, Teacher of The Year, Clinical Innovation Award and Young Scientist Award.

Dr. Ahmad has taught graduate and undergrad life science courses in classroom and online formats, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, dermatology, pharmacology and general biology. Since 2011, he has taught for UC Berkeley Extension. Read about Ahmad.

Ying Chen, Ph.D. graduated from the College of Human Medicine of Shanghai JiaoTong University. She has taught various human medicine courses, especially Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, and Intro Anatomy and Physiology, in different colleges/universities since 2012. Her teaching goals are to help her students reach their full academic potential and share the most current knowledge to improve their career potential and personal lives.
