Fatemeh Fazely

Fatemeh Fazely holds a B.S. in biochemistry from Oklahoma State University, an M.S. in biology and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Akron. She has completed two postdoctoral fellowships in maternal transmission of HIV: one at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, another at the University of California, Davis. Fazely has a keen interest in science education and in promoting the development of scientific thinking applicable to one's personal and professional life. Her teaching experience includes a wide range of delivery methods, and she has been teaching various subjects in biology and chemistry since graduate school.

Susan Parkinson

Susan Parkinson completed her Ph.D. in plant and microbial biology at UC Berkeley, focusing her doctoral work on epigenetic mechanisms that controlled gene expression in maize (corn). Her training deeply immersed her in classical genetic tools and gave her a deep appreciation for the early geneticists who discovered the major modes of inheritance before the structure of DNA was even elucidated. When not in the field crossing corn plants together, she spends a lot of time at the lab bench doing molecular biology and mentoring undergraduate students. Since graduating, Parkinson has focused on teaching and loves to think about ways to help students learn, both in-person and online. She has been teaching general biology, microbiology and genetics face-to-face at local community colleges and online for UC Berkeley Extension for nearly a decade, and looks forward to continuing to do so for years to come.

Dean Scholl, Ph.D. is Vice President of Research at Pylum Biosciences in S. San Francisco. He has more than 20 years of post-graduate experience in developing novel antibacterial therapeutics in both industry and at the National Institutes of Health. His areas of research include novel bactericidal proteins and the evolution of bacteria and their viruses.

Maria Mendoza-Magsaysay

Dr. Maria Magsaysay completed a three-year residency program in internal medicine in the Philippines after receiving a degree of Doctor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. During her medical schooling and training, she developed a growing interest in clinical research and teaching. Maria currently works as a medical research auditor at UCSF Cancer Center and an instructor at Solano Community College, where she teaches courses in biology and microbiology.

Nidhi Ahuja

Nidhi Ahuja, Ph.D., has a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, a master's in biotechnology and a doctorate in biotechnology. Her research interests lie at the interface of invading pathogenic bacteria and the susceptible human hosts. After completing her postdoctorate in microbiology and immunology at UCSF, Dr. Ahuja dedicated herself to sharing what she had learned with others. Since 2009, she has been teaching various disciplines of biology—both in the classroom and online at UC Berkeley Extension. She has taught Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology courses. She encourages her students to break the traditional disciplinary boundaries and make interdisciplinary connections in order to appreciate the beauty of learning.

Rajeev Banerjee

Rajeev Banerjee, M.S., Ph.D., is a tenured faculty member at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. He has more than 15 years of research experience in biological sciences, and—during his extended stay at UCLA—Banerjee was actively involved in training undergraduate students in molecular biology research techniques. His research interests are focused on exploring the replication and transcriptional regulation of positive-strand RNA viruses, including the hepatitis C virus.
