Health Careers Seminar II: The Application Process

Understand the process of applying to graduate-level health profession programs (medical, dental, veterinary, advanced nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, optometry and other health care programs). After receiving a broad overview of the application steps, you then examine more specific timelines in relation to your specific profession. You research the academic and experiential aspects of applying, and then evaluate your readiness and competitiveness to apply.

Note: You are strongly encouraged to take this course 6 to 12 months prior to the beginning of the application cycle for your target programs. Enrollment in this seminar is required before you submit your Intent to Apply, if you are requesting a Composite Letter of Recommendation.

CEUs

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. The CEU provides a vehicle for employers, professional groups, and licensing agencies to account for participation in non-credit seminars, workshops, and courses.

Joseph Balabis

Joe Balabis, M.P.H., is the Academic Advisor for Extension's Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program working with students on their professional school goals and academic planning. Joe has a B.S. in Psychobiology from UCLA and a M.P.H. in Community-Oriented Public Health Practice from the University of Washington. His background is rather "non-traditional" and includes experiences in public health and academia. Joe started his career working professionally in public health for over 12 years, including stops at UCSF, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the San Mateo County Health Department. He spent the last three years working first as an Academic Advisor for undergraduate public health students at Johns Hopkins University, and then as a Clinical Instructor for nursing at Samuel Merritt University.

Tiffani Quan

Tiffani Quan, Ph.D., is the Program Director for Extension's Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program. Dr. Quan has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of New Mexico and received her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from UC Santa Cruz. She completed postdoctoral research in the Biochemistry and Biophysics department at UC San Francisco. In addition to 15 years of laboratory research, Dr. Quan has also worked with several groups and organizations focused on inclusive, inquiry-based curriculum development and implementation for K-12 and undergraduate learners. This education-focused work was done with the Institute for Scientist and Engineer Educators (ISEE) at UCSC, the Science and Education Health Partnership (SEP) at UCSF, Techbridge Girls, and the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) at the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley.
