Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.

Rebekah Marsh

Rebekah Marsh, Ph.D., grew up in Nebraska and completed her B. A. (with thesis) in biology from Dana College in 1995. She earned her master's degree (M. A. with thesis) in biology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1999 and her doctorate in biochemistry from Iowa State University in 2005. Dr. Marsh went on to complete one post-doctorate in immunology at Kansas State University and another in human nutrition/biochemistry at The Ohio State University. She also has been an active scientist volunteer with PlantingScience through ASPB since graduate school.

A trained protein biochemist, experienced in biochemical, cell, genetic and molecular techniques, Dr. Marsh began teaching while pursuing her undergraduate degree and continued through her master's and doctoral degrees. She has been teaching online since 2009 and has taught a variety of college-level science courses, and thoroughly enjoys teaching and helping others in their educational journeys.

John Placyk

Dr. Placyk, Ph.D., grew up in South Jersey where he completed his B.S. in Marine Science from Stockton University in 1998. He then earned his M.S. in Biology from Northern Michigan University in 2000, and his Ph.D. from University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2006. Following additional time spent in Knoxville to pursue postdoctoral research, Dr. Placyk joined the biology faculty at the University of Texas at Tyler in 2007. After attaining tenure and a promotion to full professor, he decided to pursue teaching full time in 2019. Dr. Placyk currently teaches full-time at Trinity Valley Community College, in addition to serving as adjunct faculty at the UC Berkeley Extension (since 2012), the University of New England, and Olivet Nazarene University. Despite leaving his research lab behind, Dr. Placyk continues to publish peer-reviewed journal articles and is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Herpetology.

Christina C. Lewis, PhD

Christina Lewis, Ph.D., earned her bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, and her doctoral
degree in Physiology at Colorado State University and then continued her work as a
postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco. Most of her primary research
has focused on the genetics and genomics underlying the pathogenesis of asthma. Her areas of
expertise also include human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Throughout her
experience of studying the development and onset of a complex disease with both
environmental and genetic components, she has employed tools of genetics and genomics for
seeking answers about the airways in health and disease. Dr. Lewis’ diverse professional
experience enable her to bring a unique perspective to the classroom, where she truly enjoys
sharing knowledge and teaching about the concepts and applications that have shaped her
professional journey.
