The CLS Preparatory Program offers the required coursework, as well as many elective courses, to strengthen your application to competitive CLS training programs. Start here on your journey to becoming a clinical laboratory scientist—increasingly in demand as the need grows for professionals to perform sophisticated clinical diagnostic tests with a high degree of skill and knowledge.
There are no prerequisites for the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Preparatory Program, but a bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry is highly recommended.
The curriculum comprises 2 core courses (6 semester units) and 1–2 electives or an additional core course (3 semester units) for a total of 9 semester units (at least 135 hours of instruction).
Core courses are those that are usually required for entry into certified CLS training programs; electives are either recommended for these programs or provide additional relevant science background. Candidates must pay a nonrefundable program registration fee.
You must take all courses for a letter grade. To receive the Award of Completion, you must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average, with a grade of C or better in each course. All coursework must be completed within five years.
How to Register
By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register online for the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Preparatory Program, complete these two steps:
- Submit the online registration, and complete your student account profile if you are a new student.
- Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart.
You should register for the program before you complete your first course in the curriculum.
Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The program has an estimated total cost of $2,500 (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.
Certificate and Award Request
Once you have completed the program coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your Award of Completion. Send an email to email@example.com. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved (usually within two to three weeks), your Award of Completion will be mailed to you.
Credit for separate laboratory courses does not count toward program completion requirements.
