Develop your skills in hand drafting and sketching with this basic course in line work, lettering and page layouts for architectural drawings. Learn to produce floor plans, elevations and sections for construction and presentation to contractors and clients. Throughout this process, you learn the basics of industry-standard terms, methods of construction, and organization of graphic communication and the architectural vocabulary. The work is all done by hand, with the intent of preparing you for computer-aided work in future classes.

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Salvatore Leonardi

Mr. Leonardi has a BA in Architecture from Polytechnic of Milan, Italy and a MA in Architecture from Polytechnic of Turin, Italy. He was a researcher for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ardhi Institute of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania conducting conservation projects of historic architecture. Currently, Mr. Leonardi is heading his own independent practice as a licensed architect and designer with more than 20 years of experience specializing in interior architecture, surface materials, historic conservation, scenography, commercial and industrial design. He has taught interior design and architecture at UCLA Extension and Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles.

Laurie Friedman, M.Arch, AIA LEED AP has been a licensed, practicing architect for over 30 years and is a California credentialed teacher in Career and Technical Education. Laurie received her Master of Architecture degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and has previously taught at Boston Architectural College. Her architectural firm, Earthlight Dwellings, specializes in modern, sustainable design and has had work featured on both Dwell Home Tours and HGTV, and in AIA San Francisco’s publication “Small Firms, Great Projects.”
