Examine the history and traditions of career technical education (CTE) and its impact on contemporary CTE programs and the economy of California. Develop a professional perspective by examining contemporary education policies and teaching practices in relation to fundamental issues, theories and research in education.

Prerequisites:

Early Orientation EDUC X366.13 or consent of instructor and program director

Course Objectives

  • Identify the relationship of historical, legal, social, political, ethical and economic perspectives of career technical education to education and society
  • Understand the importance of partnerships for work-based learning activities
  • Learn the importance of developing program advisory committees in order to maintain curricular currency
  • Understand student recruitment, placement and guidance services and the roles such services can play for students
  • Coordinate the use of related community organizations and agencies to improve or enhance instruction
  • Establish, supervise and advise career technical student leadership organizations
  • Model professional standards and ethical behaviors including the appropriate use of student labor, school equipment, supplies and facilities
  • Maintain student competence and attendance records
  • Recognize the legal and ethical requirements to identify and report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect or sexual harassment
  • Recognize the legal and ethical requirement to implement school and district policies and state and federal law in responding to inappropriate or violent student behavior

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

All of our courses are taught in English. If English is not your first language, please use the following test scores as guides in order to be successful:

Vicki Pontius, Ed.D

Vicki Pontius an experienced teacher with K-12, community college, adult and Career Technical Education with expertise in F2F and online instruction. She provides practical information and resources to help meet instructional challenges. She has over 20 years working with Designated Subjects CTE and adult education credential candidates. Her continuing research interests include the impact of high stakes exams (both academic and vocational) college & career preparedness and closing the gap between what employers need and what schools can offer. She has experience with educational and non-profit grant writing and administration. Vicki participates with numerous advisory groups, planning boards, and committees and is an active community volunteer working towards resolving homeless issues. She currently teaches Designated Subjects, CTE, and Adult Education credentials, including serving as University Supervisor for Advanced Portfolio candidates for UCB Extension.
