Accessibility in UX Design

Get an introduction to important aspects of accessibility. You first examine the principles of universal design and define the concept of multimedia accessibility that can lower the barriers to entry and improve the experience of websites, apps and forms for people with disabilities. Class discussions center on the core concepts of accessibility as they apply to UX design, including an overview of assistive technologies; rethinking disabilities; proper use of color, contrast, and tagging; and form accessibility. You learn practical techniques to ensure usability vs. accessibility in web and mobile products that can be viewed and used by everyone. Create accessible forms. Learn guidelines for making online content accessible. Investigate the human side of accessibility. Course assignments provide real-world experience so that you are be prepared to incorporate accessibility into your own projects. You complete this class with portfolio pieces that display your new skills.

This is a Live-Online course where the instructors will meet through Zoom or similar platforms at the same designated time every week. Other components of the course will be asynchronous and students will be able to access material at any given day/time through Canvas Learning Management System.

Josh Halstead

Josh Halstead is a design educator and disability studies scholar. A recognized contributor to disability design discourse, he seeks to unsettle power/knowledge in theory and praxis by centering marginalized perspectives. Halstead has been an invited lecturer in academic and industry settings—from Stanford to Google—and is co-author of the forthcoming book Extra Bold: A Feminist, Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Non-Binary Field Guide for Graphic Designers with Ellen Lupton, Farah Kafei, Jennifer Tobias, Kaleena Sales, Leslie Xia, and Valentina Vergara to be published in Spring of 2021 by Princeton Architectural Press.

Jennifer Romano Bergstrom

Jen is the Director of User Experience Research at Bridgewater Associates and the Director of Marketing and Communications of the User Experience Professional Association (UXPA) and a board member of the UX Quality Certification Center (UXQCC). She earned a Ph.D. in Applied/Experimental Psychology from Catholic University of America. Jen’s research specialties include usability, eye tracking, survey design, experimental design, and cognitive aging. An established UX expert, she teaches graduate-level classes and trains and coaches UX professionals. She is co-author of Usability Testing for Survey Research (2017) and co-author/editor of Eye Tracking in User Experience Design (2014). She has held UX positions in industry (Facebook, Instagram, Fors Marsh Group) and government (U.S. Census Bureau), and has also worked as an independent consultant.
