Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Geoffrey Sargent

R. Geoffrey Sargent, Ph.D., earned his undergraduate degree in applied biology at Georgia Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University. He pursued postdoctoral studies at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) and Baylor College of Medicine, studying somatic cell genetics and molecular genetics, respectively. Sargent has worked in the Bay Area since 1998, directing research programs and in senior leadership roles at multiple biotechnology companies. Sargent has long-standing research interests in the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair and nucleotide metabolism. He teaches Biochemistry and Stem Cell Biology courses here and at other Bay Area universities. He is also a research scientist at UCSF, working on the gene therapy of sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis using pluripotent human stem cells.

Nidhi Ahuja

Nidhi Ahuja, Ph.D., has a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, a master's in biotechnology and a doctorate in biotechnology. Her research interests lie at the interface of invading pathogenic bacteria and the susceptible human hosts. After completing her postdoctorate in microbiology and immunology at UCSF, Dr. Ahuja dedicated herself to sharing what she had learned with others. Since 2009, she has been teaching various disciplines of biology—both in the classroom and online at UC Berkeley Extension. She has taught Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology courses. She encourages her students to break the traditional disciplinary boundaries and make interdisciplinary connections in order to appreciate the beauty of learning.

Louisa Weng Chi Man

Weng Chi Man, Ph.D., earned her bachelor's and doctoral degrees in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she had a wonderful time studying lipid metabolism. After graduation, Weng Chi moved to California to pursue her postdoctoral training at Stanford University where she had the opportunity to apply her biochemistry knowledge in understanding female pelvic organ dysfunction. Weng Chi has been teaching biochemistry at the UC Berkeley extension since 2009. She enjoys interacting and sharing her experience with students. She strives to help students connect the principles that they learn in class with everyday examples.
