Online, Fixed Date

Fatemeh Fazely

Fatemeh Fazely holds a B.S. in biochemistry from Oklahoma State University, an M.S. in biology and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Akron. She has completed two postdoctoral fellowships in maternal transmission of HIV: one at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, another at the University of California, Davis. Fazely has a keen interest in science education and in promoting the development of scientific thinking applicable to one's personal and professional life. Her teaching experience includes a wide range of delivery methods, and she has been teaching various subjects in biology and chemistry since graduate school.

Nidhi Ahuja

Nidhi Ahuja, Ph.D., has a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, a master's in biotechnology and a doctorate in biotechnology. Her research interests lie at the interface of invading pathogenic bacteria and the susceptible human hosts. After completing her postdoctorate in microbiology and immunology at UCSF, Dr. Ahuja dedicated herself to sharing what she had learned with others. Since 2009, she has been teaching various disciplines of biology—both in the classroom and online at UC Berkeley Extension. She has taught Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology courses. She encourages her students to break the traditional disciplinary boundaries and make interdisciplinary connections in order to appreciate the beauty of learning.

Ben Sorum

Ben Sorum, M.D.–Ph.D., earned his undergraduate degree in biological anthropology at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, and his M.D.–Ph.D. degree from Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary). While pursuing these degrees, he focused on functional neurosurgery (electrophysiology) and performed research that focused biophysically on the structure and function of CFTR. Ben's postdoctoral studies focus on utilizing ultrasound as a therapeutic tool. His current research interest is to study the effects of focused ultrasound on ion channels at the single channel/molecule level. Ben is currently a professor of biomedical studies at Cooper Medical School.

Sarita Mahajani, PhD is a Microbiology Consultant with an accomplished career of more than 30 years in academia at  Mumbai University and SP University of Pune, India. In her tenure as Assistant Professor, she taught Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology. As a graduate student, she performed research in Clinical Microbiology on markers of pathogenicity in enteropathogenic and uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli. Her passion for Microbiology and proficiency in laboratory techniques gives her an excellent command over these subjects. Her ability to address students' needs make her an outstanding professional in the field of teaching and gives her a wonderful rapport with students. She has guided several through dissertations, and has demonstrated consistent success as an educator and mentor at the under- and post-graduate levels and as a volunteer with Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG), supporting learning opportunities for girls in STEM.
