General Biology I

Gain an introduction to fundamental concepts in biology, including cell structure and function; prokaryotes; eukaryotes; metabolism; molecular and organismal genetics; classification; and animal development, form and function. Designed for biology majors and premedical and prehealth students, this course is also appropriate for returning students interested in a refresher biology class and professionals in other disciplines considering a career change to the biological sciences. This course is associated with General Biology Laboratory I MCELLBI X15.1A. Lectures and laboratory courses do not need to be taken concurrently.

Prerequisites:

One year of high school chemistry is recommended.

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

Reno C. Reyes

Reno C, Reyes, Ph.D., earned his undergraduate degree in biological sciences at University of California, Davis, his masters of science degree in biology (emphasis in cell and molecular biology) at San Francisco State University and his doctor of philosophy degree in neurobiology at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).  At UAB, he worked on mice models to understand the role of Ca2+signaling on glutamate release from astroglia of the central nervous system, and whether this release is  involved in human diseases such as Huntington’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. More recently at University of California, San Francisco he worked on mouse models to understand the role of oxidative stress in neuronal cell death with respect to stroke and Parkinson’s Disease, and the role of glutamatergic signaling in schizophrenia.
