Developmental Psychology Across the Lifespan

Study the life-span developmental approach to developmental psychology, which includes ecological/systems and person-in-context theory approaches. You’ll gain perspective on biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, linguistic, sociocultural and spiritual changes across the life span—from prenatal and birth through the major stages of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. In this survey course, you also study fundamental theories, perspectives, and critical thinking about historical and current arguments in the field.

  • Apply at least two theories to current societal trends to articulate their impact on human development and well-being
  • List at least three of the classic texts that are foundational to developmental psychology

Richard Sprott, Ph.D., Extension Honored Instructor, is an experienced university instructor in psychology. His work has focused on language and social and cognitive development in early childhood, as well as identity and sexual development in adulthood. Sprott's research interests include the intersections of identity, culture, sexuality and well-being.

Robert S. Hoople, Ed. D., is a sports consultant who has worked with athletes focused on increasing their mental performance and who has taught at the college level online (both synchronous and asynchronous) for the last twelve years. His college teaching experience in psychology has included the following courses: General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Personality, Child Development, Adolescent Development, Psychology of Maturity and Old Age, Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, History and Systems of Psychology, Research Methods, Assessment and Evaluation, Psychological Statistics, Psychology of Learning, Drugs and Human Behavior, and Human Sexuality. He has contributed to published educational materials in the psychology field. He also has been an advocate for Open Education Resources (OER) and presented in 2021 at the national Open Ed Conference, as well at the Cal OER conference.

Elaine F. Jones, Ph. D., is a developmental psychologist who has taught child development undergraduate and graduate courses for over 25 years. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented research findings at numerous conferences. Her research interests are in children's social perceptions and moral judgments of hypothetical characters depicted in social interaction scenarios. She has been interviewed by the media about her research findings and has served as consultant to media sources regarding their televised programming on topics about children's development.
